The Kings Cup 2008
The Majestic Kingdom of Lesotho welcomed the competitors of the Kings Cup Slope Style event with a bang this year. A healthy dump of snow on the evening before, led to much revelry and excitement at the local lodge, Club Maluti. Some people were so excited they started whipping each other - snowboarders I say!

The snow caused a few problems with transport to the event the next morning - culminating in Brigitte Heeb rolling her mom's 4x4 onto its roof in a ditch at the top of the pass. Luckily there were no damages to the occupants and we all managed to get down to the contest.
The Park techs from the Aces up Tour had done a magnificent job and although there were no kickers in this year’s event, the inclusion of an 8m Rainbow rail and various styles of boxes and pure rails, led to great riding and a good competition. With the imminent threat of another storm approaching it was decided to go straight to the finals after practice, so no one would get stuck in Lesotho. These fears seemed unfounded as the day was pure blue sky and sparkling snow.
In the ladies event it was no surprise to see Marta ‘Mawa’ Jekot dominating proceedings as she has for a few years now. Her season in Utah has made her even more complete as a rider and her scores would have placed her high in the men’s event. More impressive though was the improvement in Nikki Corumba and Brigitte Heeb, 2nd and 3rd respectively. These two attacked the course with no fear and proved that finally the ladies event is more than just the Mawa Show. Brigitte especially showed major commitment, just falling on a few landings that if she had landed, might have pushed her into second place.
In the men’s event the Jekot family continued to dominate, with Marcin Jekot winning by quite a distance. His time in Utah has obviously paid off as he killed the course – including a massive 1080 spin over the Butter Box. The man has style pouring out of his pants. In second place was the ever improving Matthew Amoretti. Another solid result for him, as he develops into a great, Slope Style, competitor. He was followed closely by Robbie Alunni in third. This guy practically greases up the course he is so smooth through the transitions and thoroughly deserved his placing.
It was a great event and as we enjoyed a cold one, before heading back out to civilization, the winners stoked with their prizes and all the riders happy with another day riding in the African sun!
